United Neighbors of Lower Roxbury promotes economic, civic, and social engagement to improve the quality of life of the Lower Roxbury community. We
embrace the efforts of individuals and organizations who seek to create a
vibrant and diverse community.
The UNLR is a grassroots association formed in 1971 by an active group of
neighbors, tenant organizations, and church communities. The group harnessed the activist energy of the time to organize neighbors around protecting and revitalizing the remainder of a neighborhood that had lost three miles of parks, schools, and historic homes during urban renewal. This time period saw over 2000 properties destroyed, countless numbers of people displaced and the natural environment decimated.
Community development: transforming vacant lots into vibrant public spaces (e.g. Frederick Douglass Peace Park and Bessie Barnes Memorial Park).
Engagement of over 75 volunteers per year to conduct neighborhood improvements in partnership with local residents and educational institutions.
Hosting of regular neighborhood cleanups and social events.
Running of summer programs for youth in partnership with other organizations.
